Among the dead after Monday's killing spree was an Israeli engineering professor, who blocked the door to his classroom in order to save the lives of his students.
According to emails sent to the widow of Liviu Librescu, the engineering professor saved lives after blocking the doorway to his classroom with his body and asked students to flee.
Librescu survived Nazi killings and later escaped from Communist Romania. Librescu's son says his father's career was held back because he refused to swear allegiance to the communist regime.
He says that his father was later fired after requesting permission to move to Israel. Librescu's son says that the Prime Minister of Israel personally intervened in the situation in 1977 to get the family an emigration permit.
Librescu left Israel in 1985 to move to Virginia for a sabbatical but eventually made the move permanent.
