One of the victims of the massacre at Virginia Tech has ties to this area. An University of Virginia adjunct professor of orthopedics was killed. Kevin Granata's office was room 307 on the third floor of Norris Hall. That is where the second shooting took place on Monday.

Granata was a professor at UVa from 1997 to 2003 and then he joined the staff at Virginia Tech. He kept a position at UVa as adjunct professor.

His coworkers describe him as a dedicated researcher, an excellent professor, a model scientist and a devoted father of three. They said they will be planning a memorial service to honor Granata.
