People got a sneak peak Saturday inside the new homeless shelter UVa grad and filmmaker Tom Shadyac is helping to build. Shadyac spoke to a packed house about converting the old First Street Church in downtown Charlottesville into a day shelter.
It was orginally scheduled to open Saturday but, weather has delayed the grand opening until December 19, 2009. Shadyac got the idea to turn the church into a shelter when he was in the Charlottesville area back in 2005 filming his movie "Evan Almighty". Once it's open the shelter will offer free meals, substance abuse counseling, and other services to anyone who needs them.
