A day after a shooting took the lives of 33 people at Virginia Tech, students, faculty and the Blacksburg community gathered at Cassell Coliseum to remember those who lost their lives.

Governor Kaine joined President Bush at a convocation Tuesday afternoon. The governor said that it was a "very bitter and sad day."

Kaine and his wife had just returned from Tokyo where they were supposed to start a two-week trade mission promoting the state.

"It's impossible to make sense of such violence and
suffering," President Bush said at the memorial service.

"Those whose lives were taken did nothing to deserve their
fate," the president said. "They were simply in the wrong place
at the wrong time. Now they're gone - and they leave behind
grieving families, and grieving classmates, and a grieving
nation."
