Sergeant Voices Complaint With Flags At Half Staff For VT

April 23, 2007

A U.S. Army Sergeant is voicing his complaints about flying the flag at half staff for the victims of the Virginia Tech massacre when he says the same honor is not given to fallen U.S. troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Sergeant Jim Wilt, currently serving at the largest U.S. base in Afghanistan, said in an opinion article released Monday that his comrades deaths have become a blip on the TV screen.

Wilt said that the deaths of soldiers there lacked the "shock factor" to be honored by the flag as the deaths at Virginia Tech were. He said that flags should fly at half staff on the base where the fallen soldiers were from and in their home states.

According to the Defense Department, 315 U.S. servicemen have died in or around Afghanistan since the U.S. led offensive that toppled the Taliban in 2001.
