Albemarle County Police confirm that a robbery investigation has turned into a homicide case.

Police say 48-year-old William Godsey was robbed and assaulted as he and his wife, Sandy, a manager at the Wood Grill Buffet, were leaving after closing. Police say two masked assailants approached them, hit them with a baseball bat, and stole a bag of checks and cash from the night's proceeds.

Both victims were taken to the UVa Medical Center. Godsey died from his injuries on Tuesday, April 24th.

Detectives from Albemarle County returned to the scene of the crime on Tuesday to continue their investigation. At this point, police are searching for two suspects but no arrests have been made.

If caught, the suspects could face capital murder charges because the murder happened in the commission of another felony. That makes them eligible for the death penalty.

Friends of Godsey in the small Nelson County town of Schuyler remember him as a family man who had a lot of friends in the community.
