All along the downtown mall, people stopped and took pictures of something you don't see everyday. Men proudly wore high heels, but they were walking tall for a cause.
SARA asked men, "Are you man enough to walk in her shoes?"
“We're trying to raise awareness about sexual assault in a way that's fun and non-threatening,” said Walker Thornton, SARA Executive Director.
There is nothing threatening about these men wearing the latest in women's foot fashions, or, for that matter, the latest in women's clothing and accessories.
“I told him to be fully a man he had to dress up like a woman,” said participant Will Buchanan to his friend Brian Bills.
Buchanan and Bills walked home with the Golden Shoe for the most spirited, and they received a cheerful response.
“Some guys almost walked into a pole looking at us,” said Buchanan.
However, not all participants walked on two legs. Man's best friend even joined in the fun.
“They told me that the men needed to wear women's shoes, and Tyrone is a man, so we put some leg warmers on,” said Daniel Strickland about his dog.
With so many participants from all walks of life, organizers said this event was a success.
Fan favorites Buchanan and Bills may not have known much about SARA before the fundraiser, but now they know more about the cause they helped. After walking a mile in women's shoes, they said their feet hurt, but they feel “beautiful," said Buchanan. "It's the only way to describe it."
