FREDERICKSBURG, Va. (AP) - Students at the University of Mary
Washington aren't just learning about philanthropy - they're
practicing it.
Students taking a course on the economics of philanthropy will
present $10,000 to local charitable organizations on Dec. 1.
The course is funded by Doris Buffett, the sister of famed
investor Warren Buffett. Through her Sunshine Lady foundation, she
invests in charitable causes around the country.
Buffett has funded similar philanthropy courses at 15 universities around the country.
Recently, she visited students taking the class at the Fredericksburg campus, and challenged them to pursue careers in
philanthropy.
The class has been taught for five years at UMW.
