Area Students Among National Merit Scholarship Winners

Students from Charlottesville, Crozet, and Earlysville were among the winners of the National Merit $2,500 Scholarship.

The announcement came Wednesday as some of the names of the 2,500 distinguished seniors to get the award came from our area. The winners were chosen from a pool of 15,000 finalists.

Winners were selected by a committee of college admissions officers for a combination of their accomplishments, skills and potential for success in rigorous college studies.

The winners from our area include:


Brian Bills- Charlottesville High School
Dzi-Du Chen- Charlottesville High School
Ruffin Evans- Charlottesville High School
Andrew Goodhouse- Tandem Friends School
Jennifer Ross- Western Albemarle High School
Kurt Walters- Albemarle High School


Barrie Potter- Western Albemarle High School


Bing Pei- Albemarle High School
Lizzie Troyer- Albemarle High School


Ellen Speers- Covenant School
