UPDATE: House Where Explosives Found Deemed Safe

November 25, 2009

Albemarle County Police arrived at a home on Owensville Road where explosives have reportedly been found in a garage. Bomb technicians took a close look at the explosives, determined they are safe where they're stored, and deemed the house safe.

Police responded to 1385 Owensville at around 1pm Wednesday. The house is near Meriwether Lewis Elementary School, but school is not in session because of the Thanksgiving break.

Fire and rescue crews were also called out the scene along with bomb technicians from Virginia State Police. Experts have deemed the house safe, but are not yet saying what type of explosives were found.

"The items appeared to be stable, but for safety precautions we waited for an expert from state police to come out. At that point we mitigated the situation," said Albemarle County Fire Investigator, Howard Lagomarsino.

Meriwether Lewis Elementary School was used as a staging area for emergency responders during the investigation, but neighbors were not evacuated during the investigation.

First responders included the Crozet Fire Department, Western Albemarle Rescue Squad, Albemarle County Police, and Virginia State Police.
