Man Charged With Bribing For Votes

May 7, 2007

A man was charged after he promised potential voters a chance to win prizes if they voted for two Waynesboro City Council candidates.

George Hartsook is now facing two misdemeanor charges including bribery and issuing unlawful political advertisements. Hartsook passed out fliers before last May's council election offering to give dinners and other prizes to anyone who voted for two city council candidates.

Hartsook denies that the fliers were bribes, saying that they were only incentives and that the candidates had no knowledge of the group's support. Hartsook says 1,100 fliers were printed out, enough for every registered voter.

He has a preliminary hearing on May 14th.
