There's exactly one month left until the deadline for potential city school board candidates to announce their bid. So far, only one person has officially announced their candidacy.

"We recognized that there was a lack of information out there regarding the elected school board process," said Quality Community Council executive director Karen Waters. "We thought we should probably step in and do what we could to try to stimulate interest, not only among school board candidates, but also to educate the community on what might happen if we didn't have enough candidates coming to the table."

School board members are responsible for choosing a leader, developing policies and an annual budget, and also being the bridge between the community and the schools.

Peggy Van Yahres, a current school board member, said, "I want to tell everybody that basically this is a great time to be on school board because have a very good superintendent who has a great administrative team, from principals to teachers, so things are really going well. when things are going well, it's much easier to be a board member."

Plenty of paperwork and 150 signatures are needed to run.

"It's very, very important to start now and get your paperwork in now, if you're serious about doing this, and get the petition signatures in so that we can start checking them, so that we can aid all of that process," said City Registrar Sheri Iachetta.

Even though she's stepping down after many years on the board, Van Yahres says it has been well worth the time spent.

"You have a huge impact," she said.

This November will be the first time that Charlottesville will vote for both school board and city council in a general election.
