Military Searches for Missing Soldiers in Iraq

May 14, 2007

The search for the three missing U.S. soldiers turned deadly Monday morning. U.S. and Iraqi forces ended up in a firefight with Sunni
insurgents, killing two of them.

4,000 American troops are taking part in the hunt for the missing men. The U.S. military now says that it believes Al-Qaeda is responsible for the kidnappings.

The terrorist network has claimed responsibility, but hasn't provided
any proof that they're holding the three soldiers captive.

In a posting on their website, the Islamic state of Iraq claims the kidnapped soldiers won't be safe unless the U.S. led search for them comes to an end.

They went missing Saturday before dawn in the town of Mahmoudiya. Two Humvees were on patrol looking for roadside bombs when they
were ambushed.

Response teams found the bodies of four U.S. soldiers and their Iraqi translator. There was no sign of the three other soldiers.

President Bush has been getting regular updates on the missing soldiers
since the ambush on Saturday.

Commanders on the ground say they are doing everything possible to find the missing soldiers. They hope door to door searches, traffic checkpoints and a $200,000 reward will speed their hunt and bring the troops home safely.
