Reverend Jerry Falwell Dead

May 15, 2007

Reverend Jerry Falwell was pronounced dead today after being found unconscious in his office.

Dr. Carl Moore said in a press conference at Lynchburg General Hospital that Falwell was pronounced dead at 12:40 p.m. Moore says that Falwell was found unconscious without a heartbeat around 11:00 a.m. and that efforts to revive him were unsuccessful.

Moore assumes Falwell died of sudden cardiac arrest.

Ron Godwin is the executive vice president of the school. Godwin said Falwell was found unconscious after missing an appointment Tuesday morning.

Falwell reached Lynchburg General Hospital around noon. Falwell was hospitalized twice in early 2005 for heart and lung problems. In July 2005 doctors found a 70 percent blockage in an artery, which they opened with stints.

The televangelist became the face of the religious right in the 1980s. He found Liberty University in 1971, serving as its chancellor.

Former U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich is scheduled to speak at the school's commencement on Saturday. Godwin says that the school's commencement will go on as scheduled.

Falwell was 73.
