GOP Candidates Distance Themselves From Bush

June 6, 2007

Ten candidates, just as many issues, but topic number one remained the same, the war in Iraq.

"It was a mistake to go, so it is a mistake to stay" said Rep. Ron Paul.

"We did the right thing based on what we know at the time" said Presidential candidate Mitt Romney.

And while several GOP candidates defended President Bush's decision to invade Iraq, they all distanced themselves from their own party leadership.

"This war has been very badly mismanaged for a long time" said Sen. John McCain.

Immigration reform also got plenty of air time with many candidates lining up against a bi-partisan bill backed by the President.

"This bill, no matter how you cover it is an amnesty bill, and the people of this country do not believe in that" said Presidential candidate Tommy Thompson.

The lightest moment of the evening came when Rudy Giuliani's microphone cut out, just as he answered a question about abortion rights.

"For some one who went to parochial schools all his life, this is a very frightening thing" said Giuliani.

While the debate was in progress one potential candidate was appearing elsewhere, former Senator Fred Thompson hinted he might be on the stage very soon.

That would make 11 candidates, all hoping to convince Americans ,he is the best person to challenge the Democrats and keep a Republican in the White House for another four years.
