Just last week barricades went up on both sides of the old advance mills bridge. Overweight cars were causing too much stress on the steel beams.

Now VDOT officials are looking for a way to get vehicles safely from one side to the other. They say the quickest option to get traffic flowing is to remove the old bridge and build a temporary one in it's place.

"It certainly is a good option to get traffic over the river in the short term. It will be a one lane structure that's as wide as it can be given the existing substructure the piers and the butlers we'll be using- but it is a way to get traffic across the bridge in the short term" said VDOT Spokesperson Lou Hatter.
