Less than ideal weather conditions did not keep University of Virginia students and Charlottesville residents from attending the ninth annual Lighting of the Lawn ceremony Tuesday night.
Several hundred University of Virginia students and Charlottesville community members descended on the soggy Lawn to witness the 4,000 lights being lit up.
There was plenty to keep the crowd warm, including hot chocolate, cider, and more than 20 musical groups. People in attendance also enjoyed the reading of the annual "recap" poem, which in a humorous fashion, addressed current events from the past year.
This year, organizers wanted to get back to the reason the event was first started, giving thanks for all that we have. The inaugural year of the ceremony was nine years ago, following the terror attacks of September 11, 2001.
