A complicated legal dispute involving the Rivanna Solid Waste Authority and a local recycling business sparked a protest Wednesday afternoon at the Free Speech Monument in downtown Charlottesville.

A handful of people gathered in the county to show support for local businessman Peter van der Linde.

The RSWA says van der Linde did not pay the fee for solid waste that came from Charlottesville and Albemarle County. However, van der Linde supporters say the RSWA's lawsuit targets a businessman creating local jobs.

"Our community, Charlottesville-Albemarle, says we're business friendly, and yet they will hound this man. They will file lawsuits against him. They will make him spend hundreds of thousands of dollars to defend himself," said Bob Fenwick.

Supporters of van der Linde also say they're planning a website dedicated to their cause.
