A new state report shows that Virginia is the second leading trash importer in the country, importing almost 7.3 million tons of trash last year from Washington, D.C., Maryland, New York and other states.
Virginia continues to fall right behind Pennsylvania, which received close to 9.2 million tons in 2006, according to an annual report done by the Virginia Department of Quality.
The annual tonage of out of state waste being imported has increased 3.5% since 2005 and has risen every year this decade except from 2004 to 2005.
State officials have tried to limit out-of-state trash imports. But courts have said that laws against trash imports violate interstate commerce protections.
