A German police officer is biking across America to raise money for the children and families of those killed on September 11. On Friday he was in Charlottesville.
Robert Diener left Berlin and came to the U.S. to start his 2,700 mile bike ride back in mid May. In 2002, Diener was working as a policeman in Berlin. There he met children whose fathers or mothers were killed September 11th.
Diener says after seeing their grief firsthand, he made a commitment to find a way to help.
Diener says he saw the group of children in Berlin.
“I saw their faces and eyes and though at this time, ‘I want to do something for these children.’”
Diener is personally covering the costs of this effort. One hundred percent of donations go to Tuesday's Children, a non-profit group that provides support to more than 5,000 family members who lost a loved one on September 11.
Diener will arrive at ground zero in July.
