DA In Duke Lacrosse Case Disbarred

June 16, 2007

The North Carolina State Bar has decided to revoke Mike Nifong's license to practice law.

Closing arguments took place Saturday in the ethics hearing against Nifong. A committee decided on the charges against him, saying he should be disbarred.

A disciplinary hearing committee said it agrees with the North Carolina State Bar on most charges brought against the prosecutor in the Duke lacrosse rape case.

The charges include the most serious allegations that Nifong's actions involved "dishonesty, fraud, deceit and misrepresentation." During closing arguments, prosecutor Doug Brocker built the case against Nifong, saying he made false representations.

Nifong himself has said he should be disbarred for the way he handled the case and will not appeal any action taken against him.
