Update: Virginia Police Chase Ends in Fatal Shooting

December 31, 2009

35-year-old Michael Eugene Potts of Christiansburg is dead following a confrontation with police Wednesday night.

Authorities say Potts was holding his daughter hostage when a Montgomery County Sheriff's deputy shot and killed him near Cambria Street.

It all started on Ellett Road in Christiansburg, Va and it ended in Montgomery County. Authorities say a sheriff's deputy from Montgomery County shot and killed the suspect. The officer on the scene felt there was an emminent threat to the junveile, and that was the reason for deadly force.

The juvenile was a two-year-old girl and she is safe, police say. Authorities caught up with suspect around 10:00 pm after an off-duty sheriff's deputy from Montgomery County crashed into the suspect's Dodge pickup.

The sheriff says another one of his deputies shot the suspect once and he was pronounced dead at the scene. That deputy's name is not being released. Police can't confirm if the suspect had a gun.

State Police are now investigating the shooting. The suspect's brother didn't want to go on camera but told News 7 he wonders why police had to use deadly force.

Authorities say the suspect was estranged from his daughter.
When News 7 asked his brother whether he was a good father, the brother said "he tried to be."

The deputy's name has not been released. As is routine in the case, he has been placed on administrative leave while the State Police investigates the shooting.
