You may notice a strong police presence out and about in Charlottesville on New Year's Eve.

Charlottesville Police will have extra patrols out Thursday night, making sure the streets are safe for anyone out celebrating New Year's Eve.

Police say they've used the same patrol plan every year during First Night Virginia. The event is usually a good, family-friendly time with few incidents.

Every year, police have the same message for drivers: don't drink and drive.

"There's certainly no reason at all for anyone to be drinking and driving," says Lt. Gary Pleasants with the Charlottesville Police. "You have designated drivers. They have cabs to take home, and this time of year there's the safe ride home program which is free for them to get a ride home. We will have additional officers out looking for drunk drivers throughout the evening and throughout the night."

To take advantage of the Chandler Law Firm's Safe Ride Program call 434-295-4131 if you need a ride. All cab rides within ten miles of Charlottesville are free.
