Steve Corneliussen, the Democratic candidate certified last week to seek the seat of defeated Republican Sen. Martin Williams, withdrew himself Tuesday, leaving party officials to find another nominee.
Corneliussen, who qualified as a "placeholder" candidate in early June, stepped aside, said Democratic Party spokeswoman Danae Jones.
Party officials in the first Senate district will meet Thursday and are expected to set an expedited primary to choose a new nominee.
Monday's deadline for certifying candidates to the State Board of Elections passed with Corneliussen as the Democrats' certified nominee. His withdrawal allows the party to find a replacement for him.
