All lanes on Route 29 headed southbound were at a standstill Wednesday afternoon.
That's after a car overheated and erupted into flames.
Albemarle County Police and Fire Rescue were called to the scene around 12:30PM Wednesday.
Authorities say the driver of the car noticed something was wrong and immediately got out. Seconds later the tire exploded and flames and smoke engulfed the engine.
"The best thing I can tell you and the viewers is preventative maintenance on your vehicles; have that done regularly [and] be very safety conscious when you're on the roadways," said Captain Dustin Bryant.
Police quickly cleared up traffic as soon as the car was towed away.
