Virginia Tech Plans Expanded Emergency Notification System

June 21, 2007

Virginia Tech says that its making plans for an expanded emergency notification system.

The system will allow students, faculty, and staff to be alerted to emergencies by text messages, emails, and online instant messages. All members of the Tech community can sign up for the extended service.

The "VT Alerts" system will be up and ready to go by the time classes begin on August 20th according to the school. The school says that they were looking into expanding its emergency system well before gunman Seung-Hui Cho went on a shooting rampage.

They say plans to restructure the emergency alert system started last year after an escaped prisoner accused of killing a security guard fled to the Blacksburg area.
