State Police Weekend Crack Down On Speeders

June 22, 2007

The Virginia State Police are launching a statewide crackdown on speeders and aggressive drivers this weekend.

Superintendent Steve Flaherty says the decision was made after seeing an alarming increase in traffic fatalities, specifically multiple deaths on interstates.

Since Memorial Day there have been 20 deaths on interstate highways in Virginia in ten different accidents. Flaherty says that "Operation Air, Land and Speed" will include extra patrols by troopers, supervisors, and traffic enforcement aircraft.

Similar enforcement efforts led to 26,000 citations issued on interstates 95 and 81 during four extended periods last year. Flaherty says that stepped up enforcement on the interstates will not affect troop levels on other roads across the state.
