9/11 Lawyer To Assist With Virginia Tech Fund

July 5, 2007

Virginia Tech officials say that a lawyer who assisted in administering claims from the 9/11 terrorist attacks will advise the school on how to handle its $7 million fund to aid the shooting victims.

Kenneth Feinberg worked pro bono for 33 months as special master of a $7 billion victim compensation fund following the terrorist attacks and says he will do the same for Virginia Tech.

The Washington, D.C. lawyer will spend several weeks meeting with families of the victims of the Virginia Tech shootings to find out their ideas on how donations to Virginia Tech should be used.

Virginia Tech President Charles Steger says Feinberg was approached because of his experience dealing with catastrophe. Families of many of the 32 victims say they should have more control on how the "Hokie Spirit Memorial Fund" is used.
