Route 29 Pipe Being Replaced

July 5, 2007

Construction to replace the failing drain pipe under Route 29 near Hollymead will begin Monday.

DLB Inc. of Hillsville, Virginia was awarded the emergency contract to replace the pipe. The company will use a boring machine to drill a horizontal shaft beneath the pavement. Part of the steel pipe will be pushed into the shaft to serve as the new drainpipe.

The contract was awarded under an emergency bidding procedure that expedited the time necessary to begin work. The project is estimated to cost $160,000 but unforeseen problems could increase the cost.

VDOT is warning drivers to be aware of the work zone on Route 29 just south of Airport Road beginning Monday. The traffic pattern will change as construction continues. The project is expected to take between five and six weeks.
