Man Charged In Murder Of Orange Woman

July 6, 2007

The Orange Police Department have charged a man with murder in connection to death of a woman who witnesses say tried to break up a fight.

Police charged 43-year-old Charles Washington of Orange with first degree murder in the death of 62-year-old Marilyn Baker. The charge stems from an alleged fight between Washington and 44-year-old Mark Murphy, also of Orange.

Police say that Washington picked up an object during the fight and swung it at Murphy but struck Baker in the head. According to witnesses Baker approached Washington and Murphy to try and convince them to stop fighting.

Baker was airlifted to MCV Hospital where she later died on July 5th. A preliminary medical examiner's report says that Baker died from blunt force trauma to the head.

Washington had already been in jail on a $2,000 bond for assaulting Murphy, who was also arrested for drunk in public. Washington is currently being held without bond at the Central Virginia Regional Jail.
