Fatal Accident In Albemarle County

An accident involving two cars in Albemarle County has claimed the life of one woman.

The accident happened just after noon Tuesday near Route 29 and Lewis and Clark Drive in Albemarle County. Three people were involved in the accident.

83-year-old Joan Chapman was driving a 1995 Mercury Mystique when she tried to cross Rt. 29 from Lewis and Clark Drive. 19-year-old Hassan Abdelhalim was driving south on Rt. 29 and collided with the Mercury.

Lanes were closed for about two hours as investigators made their way through the scene. Chapman was pronounced dead at the scene. Her 15-year-old grandson was a passenger in her car. He was taken to the UVa Medical Center with minor injuries.

The accident is still under investigation. There have been no charges at this time.
