Officials Warn About Lifespan of Obese Children

July 12, 2007

State officials warn that obese children may not have as long a lifespan as their parents and that they may develop debilitating chronic diseases such as diabetes earlier in life.

Virginia Health and Human Resources Secretary Marilyn Tavenner and others told a legislative subcommittee Wednesday that about one in every four adults in Virginia is overweight or obese. Reliable estimates are not available on children.

The subcommittee is looking for ways that schools can help prevent childhood obesity. State officials talked Wednesday about school policies on physical education, vending machines, school breakfast and lunch menus and nutrition education.
