Wind Cyclone at Stanardsville Pool Hurts Three

Several people spent Thursday relaxing at the pool. But for some swimmers in Stanardsville, it was not a normal afternoon.

About 25 people were hanging out by the pool at the Greene Hills Country Club, and out of nowhere, a sudden wind tipped over several umbrellas and sent three people to the hospital.

Pool manager and witness Martha Taylor says, "It was a regular day at the pool. It was very nice. We had our regular patrons here, and we noticed a dust devil, I guess that's what they call it, like a wind cyclone."

That wind cyclone started on the golf course and made its way over to the pool.

Witness Lauren Field says she was, "Freaked out because there was an umbrella coming at my head."

Witnesses say four umbrellas shot into the air and came crashing down. One made it over a 20-foot fence.

Field says, "We were playing cards, and the cards flew away and then the umbrellas came up and all of a sudden I ducked under the table and Alex was running towards the pool and everyone was just scattered."

Seconds after it began, it was gone.

"The little kids were playing in one of the dust storms, and one fell down and just came up and blew all the umbrellas away and one person got hit in the head and that's all I can remember," said witness Alex Cave.

Pool manager Susan Field says, "We really we didn't even have time to get up until that 15 seconds were over, and we realized we had been hit."

Three children were hurt. They were taken to the hospital as a precaution, but their injuries were minor.

People say this was not the first time Mother Nature has caused problems. A tornado associated with Hurricane Ivan also damaged the clubhouse area.
