Fourteen wildland firefighters from the Virginia Department of Forestry are flying west to help battle wildfires. They will fly to Boise, Idaho on Sunday as part of a 14-day federal assignment.
Crew members hail from eight counties, including Orange County.
"The crew will receive its assignment upon arrival in Boise," said John Miller, VDOF director of resource protection.
Miller said the department is working on developing additional crews, but because Virginia is facing drought like conditions, the department needs to keep Virginia's needs in mind.
Wildfires are burning in 12 Western States.
