Tennis is fun, and teaches life skills. That was the message Sunday as dozens of area children took part in "Tennis Night in America."

The event at The Boar's Head Sports Club was aimed at promoting the game among area youth. Best of all, the kids got tips from a professional tennis player who was once ranked number 8 in the world.

Brenda Schultz-McCarthy who once reached the quarterfinals at Wimbledon and the US Open, also registered the fastest serve on record in the women's circuit.

Sunday, the Dutch tennis pro spent the day explaining to children how playing not only tennis, but any organized sport can lead to life lessons on, and off the court.

"You learn that things take time, it doesn't happen right away. It's also with team sports, you sometimes play doubles so you have to socialize," said Schultz-McCarthy.

"Tennis Night in America" is held once a month in Charlottesville.
