Fluvanna County School Board Approves 2010-2011 Budget
Fluvanna County residents crowded the School Board public hearing and work session Wednesday night to protest the proposed budget cuts. The School Board faces $5 million in cuts, which means teacher positions will be eliminated and student-athletes will have to pay-to-participate.

Fluvanna County residents crowded the School Board work session and public hearing Wednesday night. They packed the aisles and sat on the floor, in the most-attended work session School Board members said they had ever seen.
The meeting grew heated with speakers sounding off about many items on the chopping block. With a $5 million budget gap to close, the School Board's budget proposal includes:
-Eliminating 15 teaching positions
-Charge a $60 pay-to-participate athletic fee.
-Special education and technology funds will be reduced.
The 11-page budget proposal includes other cuts as well.
"I just hope [the School Board] doesn't forget about the people," says Fluvanna High School Teacher David Small. "That's what attracted me to Fluvanna County schools - the people, the families and the community."
But the speakers' impassioned speeches did little to sway the majority vote. School Board members slammed the gavel on the work session, setting, for the now, the direction of Fluvanna County Schools.
The next stop for the budget proposal is the Fluvanna Board of Supervisors, who will review it Wednesday, March 17.

oh please don't sit here and tell me how hard their jobs are...they knew last night when they came into that meeting what they were going to do....listening to the comments of the people was just something they had to do!!! It's all a bunch of bull if you ask me!! If you think for one minute that the pay-to-play is going to be fair to all athletes you are sadly mistaken...it's a guarantee that if you can't afford it you will still be allowed to play..how fair is that? If you people think that even if EVERYONE has to pay to play that it's going to cover everything that is needed for ALL sports you are sadly mistaken again!!
Issues like this sadden me. If we have budget cuts now that reduce staff, how is the SB planning to fund the additional staff that will be required when the new school opens. Even if we pretend that there will be no additional teachers needed, what about additional custodial, administrative, health and food service workers. What about additional expenses related to grounds and utilities. How much in additional taxes will we have to incur to meet those expenses. It might be time to tighten our belts and rethink the need for a new school and new expenses in light of this economy.
The SB said they were supporting all extra curriculars with no cuts, that is why there is a fee to participate. That is not what you are reporting. I realize that it is dramatic to say they 'slammed the gavel', but let's be realistic they are making hard decisions and no one is going to be happy.
