Greene County authorities are investigating a fatal fire. The flames broke out at a house on Marigold Road shortly before 10 a.m. Friday morning.

Firefighters found the body of a man inside the home. State police are also investigating the incident. The identity of the victim is still unknown.

Officials say that the fire does not appear to be suspicious.

"The fire was enough to do damage inside but it had no broken through the walls or through the ceiling," said Greene County Sheriff, Scott Haas.

Haas says the only way his team knew there was a fire was from the smoke they could see coming from the back of the house when they arrived.

Deputies say a neighbor had come to check on the man who lived alone in the house, but when he got there instead of the usual friendly face he was faced with flames and smoke.

"When he saw it he tried to make entry and he was forced back by the smoke and the heat, he was able to put some water on the fire before we got on the scene but was unable to retrieve the body, said Haas.

Neighbors say the victim was elderly and mostly kept to himself, but was always friendly when they saw him.

"He seemed like a friendly person. He always seemed to work hard I used to see him when I would come home from the bus stop, I would see him," said Jerlissa Davis, a neighbor.

Tom Whitten was both a friend and neighbor who often stop by the house to check in on his old friend.

He says he's sorry he didn't get to see him one last time.

"He didn't have much family, they were down at the beach and he was a nice man. He more or less just lived in this little house up here with his dog, a little beagle," said Whitten.
