Survivor Search Over In Bridge Collapse

August 2, 2007

Search teams were back on the Mississippi River Thursday looking for victims of Wednesday's catastrophic bridge collapse in Minneapolis.

About 50 cars tumbled into the river during the height of the evening rush hour killing several people and injuring many more. An estimated two to three dozen people are still missing, some entombed in cars underneath slabs of concrete.

"It was unsafe last night to move those people since the bridge is still
shifting" said Chief Tim Dolan of the Army Corps of Engineers.

A camera for the Army Corps of Engineers caught the terrifying scene as it happened. Tons of steel and concrete twisting and falling 60 feet below.

Now Investigators are scouring the jumbled mess, hoping to find clues to anything that might help explain what caused this busy 8-lane bridge to crumble .

This is what readers woke up to this morning. And just over my shoulder the road to no-where after the bridge buckled and snapped.
Homeland security officials say there is nothing to suggest terrorism, but many who survived this ordeal were certainly terrified.

"It sounded like a bomb, so we ducked" said one person.

"I didn t know what it was, thought my breaks were going out" said another person.

The 40 year-old bridge was under construction and was rated structurally deficient two years ago, but Minnesota's governor says there are literally 80,000 bridges in the U.S. with the same designation and engineers didn't believe the bridge needed to be replaced immediately.
