UVa has hired its first emergency preparedness coordinator, Marjorie Sidebottom.
Sidebottom has been director of emergency preparedness for the U.Va. Health System since 1993. She will now be responsible for developing the University's key emergency policies.
With parents and students increasingly concerned about security, UVa has taken steps to increase emergency preparedness. More than 6,400 people have signed up for "UVa Alerts," a new emergency notification system using text messaging.
UVa has also placed a dozen LCD screens around the university. The LCD message boards will display non-emergency messages when not needed for alerts.
