A block party in Harrisonburg got out of control Saturday afternoon.

It happened in the area of Port Republic Road near Forrest Hills after an estimated 8,000 James Madison University students and other people from outside the area gathered for a party at the off-campus housing complex.

Uniformed police and riot cops were called in and had to pepper spray numerous people who authorities say became disorderly.

It's unclear if any injuries were reported outside those who were sprayed, but an unknown number of people were arrested.
