More than a dozen elementary students known as the “Future Fielders” were invited onto Davenport Field before Friday night’s University of Virginia baseball game against Virginia Tech.

Following the death of 9-year-old ball player Carson Raymond, a foundation was created in his name to raise money for improving local baseball fields and promoting interest in area baseball programs.

Since October, the Carson Raymond foundation has raised more than $50,000 and is in the final stages of improvements to the field at Woodbrook Elementary in Albemarle County.

Raymond’s father, John, threw out the first pitch prior to Friday night’s match up against Virginia Tech, in which the Cavaliers defeated the Hokies 4-2.
