Woolen Mills Dam Opening Up

August 14, 2007

The Woolen Mills Dam will be slightly opened to allow the shad to continue their migration up the Rivanna River.

The Rivanna Conservation Society will begin opening the historic dam which will provide more recreational opportunities for boaters and fisherman.

The society and the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries are hopeful shad will return to the river in the coming years and be able to swim far upstream without the dam blocking their path.

Demolition is expected to take two weeks and cost $250,000, roughly 50% to 95 feet of the 270 foot dam will remain standing providing that it is stable.
