The state plans to offer online standardized reading and mathematics tests to assess the academic achievement of students with disabilities.

Superintendent of Public Instruction Patricia Wright said Thursday that the Virginia Modified Achievement Standard Test will replace the current Virginia Grade-Level Alternative, a portfolio-style assessment that's scored locally. The state will start using the VMAST math assessment in 2011-12 and the reading testing in 2012-13.

The new computer-scored test is designed for students who are learning grade-level content but because of their disability, they cannot be held to the same achievement standards as classmates who take the regular Standards of Learning exams.

A timetable hasn't been established for phasing out use of the VGLA for writing, history and science.
