A man convicted of beating a 21-month-old boy to death last year will spend the next 40 years behind bars for the crime.
Mohammad Ahmad was sentenced today by a Fairfax judge. The 25-year-old was convicted of beating Myles Simon to death while the boy was at a day care center run by Ahmad's wife at a rented town house in Kingstowne. The woman left Myles and two other children with her husband, and when she returned, Myles was dead.
A medical examiner testified that the toddler died from severe blows to the head.
A jury deliberated for 15 minutes before recommending the maximum sentence of 40 years in May. The judge said she saw no reason to reduce the recommended sentence.
Ahmad did not testify in his trial, but his attorney says he plans to appeal the conviction.
