Police say two people were killed and two others were injured in a head-on crash on Interstate 64 in Augusta County Wednesday evening.
The crash occurred shortly before 6pm when a Buick traveling east ran off the left side of the road and crossed the median near mile marker 98.
The Buick crashed head-on into a Toyota Corolla going west.
The driver of the Buick, 29-year-old Edward L. Furrow of Waynesboro, and the front-seat passenger in the Carolla, 71-year-old Brij B. Ramgopal of White Bluff, Tennessee, both died at the scene.
The driver of the Carolla, 55-year-old Vijay B. Ramgopal, and a second passenger, 18-year-old Vijaypa Ramgopal, from that car were flown to the University of Virginia Medical Center.
There is no word at this time as to the conditions of the two taken to UVa.
All lanes of traffic were closed for a time, but have since reopened. The westbound lanes were closed for almost three hours. Traffic was backed up at least three miles.
Police say they do not yet know why the Buick crossed the median. They are investigating.
