Friday is National Bike to Work Day, which could explain the increase of cyclists of Charlottesville streets. Bicyclists are ditching their cars for the day to pedal their way to work.
Plenty of cyclists took advantage of the nice weather Friday morning and rode their bikes to work. The City has set up pit stops throughout Downtown Charlottesville, two of which are in front of the Main Street Market and at Lee Park.
The rest stops give cyclists a chance to re-fuel, stock up on food, search for a few extra parts for their bike, or even drop off their bicycle for a tune-up.
National, regional and local bicycle advocacy groups have been encouraging people all week to try bicycle commuting as a health and safe alternative to driving.
Participants say there's been a good turnout so far.
"One of the great things about Bike to Work Week is it helps to bring some emphasis to the physical fitness and environmental benefits of cycling. Any way that encourages people who wouldn't otherwise ride a bike to get out on the roadways, I think is a really great thing," said Shawn Tevendale.
The local group Alliance for Community Choice in Transportation will wrap up Bike Week with the 2010 Bike Summit Saturday. During the summit, the community will gather ideas on how to make bicycling safer and easier in the Charlottesville area.
