The apparent front-runner in the Republican race for Congress said he still supports oil drilling off the Virginia coast.

State Sen. Robert Hurt is leading in the polls among seven Republican candidates.

On June 8, Republicans will pick one to challenge incumbent Democrat Tom Perriello.

In an interview with the Newsplex, Hurt offered a qualified endorsement of drilling.

"We have to include offshore drilling," Hurt said. "We have to include drilling all over this country in order to meet the demands for our society, the demands for our businesses.

Hurt and several other Republican candidates plan to meet with Tea party members in Albemarle County Thursday evening.
