Albemarle police, fire and rescue responded to the call for an employee accidentally firing a gun. It happened just after 2:00a.m. Thursday morning and when they arrived they realized the corrections officer had shot himself in the leg.
Police say the prison guard was sitting inside a car in the parking lot with two other officers on their break. All three were clearing their guns and in the process one of the officer's guns fired shooting him in the thigh.
“That was something that happened outside of the facility that didn't involve the inmates,” said Colonel Ronald Matthews, Charlottesville Ablemarle Regional Jail Superintendent.
Police say, to be in a law enforcement position gun safety training is required.
“All certified jail officers must complete a minatory fire arms course,” explained Matthews.
“Anytime that you're an officer, whether its law, police officer, deputy, correctional officer involved with handling fire arms in the performance of his or her duty there is a mandated program that they have to go through,” said Lt. John Teixeira, with Albemarle County Police.
The Albemarle County police have finished their investigation of the early morning incident and say no charges will be filed. However, the superintendent of the jail said they are conducting their own investigation.
“Just to see what happened, what was the circumstances surrounding the incident and just try to see if we need to put anything in place to make sure nothing like this happens again,” Matthews said.
Police have not released the identity of the victim, but say he is a 46-year-old white male and he has been working as a corrections officer for the past 2 years.
The corrections officer is at UVa Medical Center and is listed in stable condition.
