Tech Students Gear Up For Free Concert

September 6, 2007

The football field has been covered and the stage has been built as students and Virgina Tech gear up for a huge free concert.

About 50,000 people are expected to attend.

Four acts will take the stage offering music to students trying to heal after last semester's tragedy. Artist Dave Matthews proposed the concert soon after the April 16th shootings.

In addition to the Dave Matthews Band, the performers will include hip hop artist Nas, John Mayer, and country singer Phil Vassar.

The performers are all donating their time, and each student, faculty and staff member was offered a free ticket. Night classes were canceled. Hovis says families of those killed were invited.

Those with free tickets had the option to buy one as well for $40, and 5,000 tickets were offered to the public at $65 apiece. Hovis said the ticket sales would help cover Tech's expenses of about $1 million to put on the concert.
