Reaction To Warner Senate Announcement

September 13, 2007

Republicans and fellow Democrats had reactions to the announcement that former governor Mark Warner will be running for the U.S. Senate.

"Mark Warner decided today to take on a campaign he's never run before, a campaign focused on his record. The first question he'll have to answer is a $1.38 billion question: why did Mark Warner break his number one campaign promise to the people of Virginia?"
-From a National Republican Senatorial Committee news release
Thursday morning, noting a tax increase Warner pushed through a
Republican-dominated legislature in 2004.

"Mark's experience, record of bipartisan accomplishment, and results-oriented focus will make a real difference in Washington at a time when our country needs it most."
-Governor Tim Kaine, a Democrat and Warner's successor.

"I have come to know Mark in the last six months and have seen he is an outstanding American leader who will run a great campaign and be a tremendous asset to his state and his country. We're excited about his campaign and even more excited about him joining us in the Senate."
-Senator Charles Schumer of New York, chairman of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee.
